Mia Seppo

Assistant Director-General for Jobs and Social Protection - International Labour Organization

Mia Seppo was appointed Assistant Director-General for the Jobs and Social Protection Cluster in February 2023, bringing over 20 years of experience with the United Nations. She has served as UN Resident Coordinator in Malawi and Bangladesh and as UNDP Resident Representative in Zimbabwe. In Bangladesh (2017–2021), she led the UN’s response to the Rohingya refugee crisis and COVID-19, working closely with the government on development and recovery plans. As Resident Coordinator in Malawi (2013–2017), she coordinated UN support for national elections, ID registration, and responses to natural disasters. Previously, she held leadership roles in Sierra Leone, Tajikistan, and the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, focusing on mission planning, peacebuilding, and governance. She began her UN career in 1996 with a focus on governance and human rights, following roles in civil society. Seppo holds a Master’s in Social Sciences from the University of Helsinki.
