Investment Meets Adaptation in a Changing Climate

According to the Climate Policy Initiative’s Global Landscape of Climate Finance 2025 report, mitigation finance accounted for the majority of global climate flows, reaching USD 1.8 trillion in 2023, compared with USD 65 billion for adaptation finance (likely an underestimate given data and tracking limitations) and USD 58 billion for finance delivering dual benefits across both adaptation and mitigation objectives. Broader global estimates suggest total climate finance needs could reach USD 5–8 trillion per year. This highlights that even at current levels, a significant financing gap remains, particularly for adaptation.
Climate adaptation and resilience remain chronically underfinanced despite increasing physical risks across infrastructure, water, food systems, health, and natural systems. As climate impacts intensify, adaptation is moving from a primarily public-sector concern to a growing area for private investment. While governments have historically led on funding, recent estimates suggest private finance could contribute around 10-20% of adaptation needs, with a significant “missing middle” where blended finance may play a critical role.
This webinar will explore how private capital can support climate adaptation. By examining investable opportunities in areas like resilient infrastructure, adaptation technologies, nature-based solutions and risk mitigation, the discussion aims to help a broad financial audience understand where and how capital can be deployed to address climate-related risks and build long-term resilience, alongside ongoing mitigation efforts.
Moderated by the Adaptation Lead at the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), Paul Smith, the session will bring together diverse perspectives from across the community. Speakers from Edmond de Rothschild, Intent and others, will share practical insights on market development, risk allocation, and the role of collaboration in scaling adaptation finance.
