Emerging Markets Innovative Finance Systemic Change

Institutional investors are increasingly seeking investment opportunities in emerging markets that align financial returns with sustainable development impact, yet accessing these opportunities at scale remains challenging. This session will spotlight new approaches and investment solutions developed by Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to facilitate private capital deployment into emerging markets. Discussions will focus on practical examples of commercial investment opportunities, highlighting how de-risking mechanisms and partnership models can support scalable institutional allocations.

Framing this topic

This short section provides context for the event to ensure all participants, regardless of prior knowledge, are equipped to engage with the discussion.

Emerging markets represent a significant investment opportunity for long-term investors, particularly in sectors such as foundational infrastructure, agribusiness, value added manufacturing, tourism, and health that are linked to economic development and climate transition. However, barriers related to risk perception, pipeline access, and market complexity continue to limit institutional participation. As part of ongoing reform efforts, MDBs have been developing new structures, investment platforms, and risk-sharing approaches enabling institutional investors to access commercially viable opportunities while benefiting from the expertise and track record of development finance institutions.
