This session explores how investors can access reliable, community-generated data on human rights and environmental risks in Indonesia’s nickel sector—the world’s largest source of mined nickel. Bringing together civil society, investors, and critical minerals experts, the event highlights an innovative, ongoing data initiative that turns local insights into decision-useful information to improve due diligence and steer capital toward more responsible mineral supply chains.

Indonesian nickel is central to the global energy transition, yet investors and buyers face a data gap: corporate disclosures are limited. NGO, community, and labor-union information can provide a more complete understanding, but it is poorly structured for timely investor use, and there are no agreed standards for assessing the quality of companies’ community engagement, leaving due diligence vulnerable to superficial “tick-the-box” assessments. This session introduces a new initiative to generate community-driven due diligence data and explores how it can serve as a model for improved due diligence and capital allocation decisions shaping the energy transition.
