In a historical shift context moving from a fuel-intensive to a material-intensive energy system, the Commodity Trade Finance sector will have to provide raw materials required for the energy transition, adapt to new technlogies and decarbonise its operations, all at the same time. But how banks can accelerate their co-contributions?

Matteo Somaini

President - Lugano Commodity Trading Association (LCTA)

After a brief experience as Research Assistant within the School of Management of “Politecnico di Milano” between 2003 and 2004, Matteo began his carrier in the steel trading industry joining the Order Administration of Duferco SA. In 2005 he moved to the Finance Team of the company and today he is deputy head. In 2020 he was elected president of the Lugano Commodity Trading Association and member of the board of SUISSENÉGOCE, the Swiss federal association of commodity trading.

Deia Markova

Head of Trade & Sustainable Commodity Finance - Société Générale in Switzerland

Deia Markova started her career in 2001 at Societe Generale in Paris in the Corporate Finance Advisory department and later joined the Structured Commodity Finance team. From 2014 to 2017, Deia headed the corporate lending business of Sberbank (Switzerland), with a focus on commodity producers and traders. In 2018, she joined SG Zurich, in charge of impact-based financing solutions aimed at the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. In January 2020, Deia was appointed Head of the Trade & Sustainable Commodity Finance department in Switzerland and joined the Executive Committee of SG Zurich.

Stephen Thomas

Head of ESG & Sustainability - ArrowResources AG

Stephen spent the first half of his career in international environmental consulting specialising in contaminated land remediation and environmental compliance M&A projects for diverse industrial clients including the oil and gas, mining, pharmaceutical, electronics and automotive sectors. From consulting, Stephen moved to the mining and metals sector where he has developed, implemented and directed environmental and social-related projects at both the corporate and site levels. Stephen spent many years managing the environmental, social and human rights aspects of a French company’s nickel mines and refineries as well as Australian and Canadian gold mines in West Africa.

Adam Hearne

Co-Founder & CEO - CARBONCHAIN

Adam is an expert on the commodity and manufacturing sectors’ transition to a net-zero economy. He is the CEO and co-founder of CarbonChain, providing automated, asset-level carbon accounting for most carbon-intensive supply chains. Adam’s career spans two decades across supply chain management, extractive commodities, and technology start-ups. He was the senior program manager for 8 countries in Amazon’s European supply chain for 3 years, and he worked at Rio Tinto for 12 years, increasing productivity of several ore supply chains. He helps some of the most important commodity companies, traders, manufacturers, financiers and logistics firms accelerate their climate action.
