Associate Director, Research - Climate Policy Initiative

Valerio Micale is an Associate Director at Climate Policy Initiative’s London office, where he leads CPI’s work on the financial sector’s transition and on advancing applied research across the organization. With over 20 years of experience in climate finance and sustainability, his expertise also encompasses investment in clean solutions, blended finance, financial modelling and risk analysis, carbon markets, and impact evaluation, including multi-criteria analysis.

Valerio guided CPI’s first science-based Paris alignment analysis and designed and developed the Net Zero Finance Tracker (NZFT) and its subsequent expansions. The NZFT is an open-data platform that monitors the financial sector’s transition from net-zero commitments to tangible actions and impacts, covering 1,500 financial institutions and USD 286tn in assets. Its data has directly informed major financial sector transition reports by pension funds, banking authorities, and intergovernmental organizations.

Valerio also enhanced the Clean Investment Funds’ sectoral strategies, and the Green Climate Fund’s appraisal process by designing tools like the Investment Criteria Scorecard (ICS), which improved the effectiveness of climate change programming at the country level and strengthened the quality of their projects. Valerio has extensive expertise in climate finance, risk management, and quantitative modeling developed through key roles at CPI, Bocconi University, and First Climate Zurich.
